Twentieth century farmers: Mr. Webster Cory, an early 20th century farmer.

Mr Webster Cory, horse and dog

Mr. Webster Cory farmed the 1000 acre Manor Farm at Notgrove in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, which he had acquired in 1916. During the 1920s, and in the midst of an economic decline, he undertook a complete rethink of the farm, dividing it into four self-contained units, in which the closest attention was paid to efficiency and the reduction of costs. All costs were broken down and allocated to the separate departments in order to monitor profitability on a continuing basis. By doing so, he made sure that each unit could be expanded or contracted as prevailing economic conditions dictated.
