Farm buildings: Farm buildings are a significant aspect of the rural landscape whether grouped as part of a farmstead or larger village, or as isolated 'outposts' in fields and valleys as is more commonly seen in the north.

There are a great variety of traditional farm buildings to be found, such as barns, cowsheds, cartsheds, stables, poultry houses and granaries. They are an important part of the farm, providing shelter for livestock, protection for the farmer, staff, and also farm machinery. They allow grain, animal feeds, hay and silage to be safely stored until required. Most of today's older farm buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries, with newly-built examples more like factory-style processing units.
