Mills:
There are two types of mill, those powered by
wind and those by water.
A well-preserved windmill, dating from the 17th century, stands alone
on the hill at Brill in Buckinghamshire.
Water mills were in use in England before the wind mill. Introduced by
the Romans, they were only developed and used on a large scale during
the later Saxon period. Wind mills were present from the 12th century
onwards and were situated where water was not available. Wind mills were
most prominent throughout the east of England. There are three types of
wind mill; an example of the oldest, the post mill, is pictured here.
The use of the traditional type of mill declined after the introduction
of high-speed steam-driven milling machinery in the 19th century.
