Uplands: In few other countries of a similar size is there such a variety of contrasting landscapes.

Martindate, Cumbria
Three working farms, surrounded by drystone walls, lie in the long valley of Martindale, Cumbria (formerly Westmorland).

Much of England's northern counties, from Yorkshire and Lancashire to the Scottish border, constitute the 'uplands'. Here are to be found a blend of landscapes, hills, mountains, moorlands and dales. In the Lake District, England's highest peaks and largest and deepest lakes are to be seen. Afforestation, reservoir building, mining and the development of housing and tourism all take their toll on upland landscapes. Some protection has come through the designation of large areas as either National Parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
