Leisure: Time for leisure and recreational activities was small for many during the past.

Maypole dancers
Maypole dancing, Gloucestershire, 1952.

Fairs, circuses, sporting events and bands, giving public concerts in parks all filled people's leisure time. In towns and cities, music halls provided evening entertainment, and museums and art galleries began opening on Sundays. Country people would enjoy their allotments and gardens, working in them in the evening, and entering home grown produce in the annual village shows. Village inns and reading rooms were popular, and football and cricket teams were established in some villages.
