Lorry: Lorries first began to appear on the roads of towns and cities during the last decade of the 19th century.

Early delivery lorry

These first vehicles were steam powered and were known as 'steam goods carriers'. Although steam lorries were produced up until the 1930s, lorries powered by petrol and diesel were also being developed, and were both firmly established by this time. For farmers and country-based industries, lorries were soon seen as a convenient means of transporting produce and products direct to customers and retailers in towns and cities. The early delivery lorry in this picture is transporting barrels of ale.
