Railway:
Railways transformed the relationship between
town and countryside, enabling people and goods to be moved much more
efficiently and quickly between the two.
Freight trains allowed country producers to supply towns and cities with
a wide variety of goods. Perishable foodstuffs for example included milk,
butter, eggs, fruit and vegetables and fish too. Tinned groceries were
also carried, as were consignments of cotton, wool and woollen goods.
Heavier bulk transport included coal, timber and iron ore; the train pictured
is transporting bulky farm implements. All these products were being transported
by rail as early as the 1830s. By the 1870s, railway passenger travel
and freight transport had become firmly established.
