Weeding: Successful crop growing is a battle against the threat from weeds. They have to be kept in check if the young plants are to have a chance of prospering.

Turnip field being hoed

Before the twentieth century, when chemical treatments provided a further option, this job had to be done either mechanically or, very laboriously, by hand. For all the time it took, however, hand hoeing could produce excellent work. The photograph shows a field of turnips being hoed on a Yorkshire farm in 1945.
