Joint Reading Room Service: The Museum of English Rural Life and Reading University Library Special CollectionsTo see plans of a joint Reading Room service to be provided by the Museum and the Reading University Library Special Collections, please visit http://www.library.reading.ac.uk/colls/special/jointservice/index.html. New Landscapes, New TechnologiesA new project, funded by the New Opportunities Fund, in partnership with Berkshire Record Office, "New Landscapes, New Technologies" published to the internet a wealth of material from the collections of Berkshire record Office and the Museum of English Rural Life. New Landscapes"New Landscapes" looks at Enclosure in Berkshire. It makes use of the latest digital technologies to provide access to historic manuscript maps and documents online. The maps and land awards on this site show the process of enclosing the common fields of the county of Berkshire between 1738 and 1883. >> Go to the New Landscapes website New Technologies"New Technologies" shows the new implements and machines introduced into farming from the mid-eighteenth century onwards. British agriculture went through major changes in its structure, techniques and output during this period. Access To Archives (A2A)The Museum of English Rural Life has many of its archive collections listed and described on the Access to Archives (A2A) website. These are part of a large searchable database onliner. To view the collections for the Museum of English Rural Life, select this in the Location field and your search results will only include those catalogues from MERL. Collections GatewayMERL is a partner in the Collections Gateway project, which brings together descriptions of collections held at museums, libraries and archives in the south-east, and describes the facilities and access to these collections for researchers. Rural Museums NetworkMERL is a member of the Rural Museums Network. The Rural Museums Network exists to bring museums of farming and the countryside closer together for mutual benefit. Its website contains news, views and information about the Network and the museums involved. University Museums and Collections (UMACS)MERL is part of the University of Reading's University Museums and Collections Service. As well as the Museum of English Rural Life, the University museums and collections include the Ure Museum of Classical Archaeology, the Cole Museum of Zoology and the Research Centre for Evacuees and War Child Studies. UMACS works to widen access for the public to these collections, and manages public events and schools programmes based at these collections. Details of these collections can be found at their own websites, or through Collections Gateway Other resourcesMERL's own website contains a range of resources based on our collections, including a large database of items in the collection, online exhibitions, resources for schools, and descriptions of the collections.
