From the North

Caversham, Sonning Common

Follow A4155 signs from Caversham Bridge (Caversham Bridge Rd) to town centre. At second roundabout take the first exit into Vastern Rd and past the station multi-storey car park on your right.

At the next roundabout turn right, go under bridge and take left lane. Turn left into Forbury Rd at next roundabout.

At next roundabout take 2nd exit. Move into the right hand lane and follow the road round to the left. Stay in the right-hand lane.

At the second set of traffic lights filter right into Eldon Rd. Continue to the end of Eldon Rd.

Turn right at the traffic lights onto London Rd, get into the left hand lane.

Go past the Royal Berkshire Hospital on your left and take the next left turn into Redlands Road. The Museum is the large red brick Victorian building on the right-hand side, a short way up Redlands Road.


From the East

Woodley, Twyford, Sonning, M4 Jct 10 via A329M

Take the A3290 Wokingham Road, entering Reading. Follow signs for town centre (A4).

At Cemetery Junction traffic lights, branch left onto London Road, continue forward (signposted M4 West, Basingstoke A33, Newbury A4).

Redlands Road is first turning on the left, just past The Royal Berkshire Hospital. The Museum is the large red brick Victorian building on the right-hand side, a short way up Redlands Road.


From the South

Spencers Wood, Whitley, Lower Earley

Take the A327 Shinfield Rd towards Reading town centre. Continue past the University of Reading.

At the next traffic light junction (Christchurch Green) turn right and immediately left into Redlands Rd (signed for Royal Berks Hospital).

Continue down Redlands Road, passing Allcroft Road and Morgan Road. The Museum is the large red brick Victorian building on the left, opposite the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

From M4 Jct 11

Take the B3270 signed University. Continue on this road until you reach the large Black Boy Roundabout.

Take the first exit (A327) Shinfield Road towards the University and Reading town centre. Continue on this road, going over two mini roundabouts and one set of traffic lights, until you pass the University of Reading (Whiteknights campus) on your right.

At the next traffic light junction (Christchurch Green) turn right and immediately left into Redlands Road.

Continue down Redlands Road, passing Allcroft Road and then Morgan Road on your left hand side. The Museum is the large red brick Victorian building on the left, opposite the Royal Berkshire Hospital.


From the West

Tilehurst

Take the A329 Oxford Rd and continue into the town centre via Chatham St. At the IDR (inner distribution road) roundabout, take the dual carriageway (A329) towards the A33.

Continue past the A33 turnoff, past the Oracle shopping centre and through the next traffic lights. You are now on Queen's Rd.

Keep in the right hand lane and go straight through all traffic lights. The road reaches a sharp left turn controlled by traffic lights. Take right-hand lane and follow the road round to the left. Stay in the right-hand lane.

At the second set of traffic lights turn right into Eldon Rd. At the end of the road, turn right onto London Road.

Get into the left hand lane and travel past the Royal Berkshire Hospital, take the next left turn into Redlands Road. The Museum is the large red brick Victorian building on the right-hand side, a short way up Redlands Road.

Calcot, Southcote, Coley, M4 Jct 12

Take the A4 Bath Rd towards the town centre. At IDR (inner distribution road) roundabout, take the third exit (signposted to the A33).

Follow the road through the lights and towards the right, avoiding the slip road exit.

Pass the Oracle shopping centre and go through the next traffic lights. You are now on Queen's Rd.

Keep in the right hand lane and go straight through all traffic lights. The road reaches a sharp left turn controlled by traffic lights. Take right hand lane and follow the road round to the left. Stay in the right-hand lane.

At the second set of traffic lights turn right into Eldon Rd. At the end of the road, turn right at the traffic lights onto London Rd, get into the left hand lane.

Public transport

Reading station is 40 miles from London Paddington.

Please note that Reading Buses operate a flat-fare system. For details of timetables, routes and the current fare, please visit Reading Buses website at www.reading-buses.co.uk. The Museum is in Reading Buses' Greater Reading Urban area.

The following bus services can be used to reach the Museum. They are all available from outside Reading Station.

Services 12 and 20
These services run every 20 minutes.
Get off at the first stop at the bottom of Kendrick Road. Walk a short way up the hill and cut through the footpath to the left of Abbey School. At the end of the path the Museum is on your right hand side.

Services 9 and 144
The number 9 runs every twenty minutes. The 144 is hourly.
The bus stops in Craven Road next to the Hospital. Walk down to London Road and left past the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Turn left in to Redlands Road and the Museum is located a short way up on the right hand side immediately past Acacias Road.

Royal Berkshire Hospital - Madejski Stadium Park and Ride
The Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) operate a Park and Ride service between the Madejski Stadium and the Hospital.
The service operates Monday - Friday every 15 minutes between 6.35am - 6.35pm (last bus back to the Stadium, 7.10pm).
Adult return fare is just £1. Accompanied children under 16yrs travel free. No service on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays.

  • From M4 Junction 11, take the A33 towards Reading
  • Follow the Park and Ride signs to the Madejski Stadium
  • Park in Stadium Car Park 1 or 2
  • Board the RBH Park and Ride bus
  • Pay the driver
  • Get off the bus in Redlands Road outside Berkshire Cancer Care (the bus stop is immediately after the turn off of London Road)
  • Board the bus back to your car from the same bus stop
