FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN WALL HANGING

Michael O'Connell’s textile art produced for the Festival of Britain inspires Susan Moxley's Stained Glass window at MERL

The Stained Glass Window

The stained glass window commemorates the opening in its new home of the Museum of English Rural Life.

The window was part funded by a generous donation from The Friends of the University of Reading and The Clothworkers' Foundation.

The window was designed and made by the Oxfordshire-based artist, Susan Moxley. She took her inspiration from the wall hanging produced for the Festival of Britain by Michael O'Connell. The wall hanging is in the museum's collection but cannot be displayed due to its size and delicate condition.

The window measures 4 by 3 metres. The image to the left is just one section of the entire window. To see the complete window you will have to visit the museum!

Susan Moxley has created a triangular-shape window, which reflects the essence of the museum and its collections – the farming life of the British Isles in a stylised and contemporary way.

She was inspired by the images in Michael O'Connell's original work and by the colours he used. Her challenge was to recreate that original spirit by careful selection of glass and in her painting onto the glass.
